New statistics reveal that the number of criminal prosecutions brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) rose from 24 in 2012/2013 to 52 in 2014/2015.
There has also been an increase in workplace fatalities over the last 12 months, with 142 dying on the job in 2014/2015, compared to 133 in 2012/2013.
Worrying Health and Safety Figures
Company directors need to be concerned about these figures as the penalty for health and safety breaches has risen substantially. Under new sentencing guidelines, health and safety failures could result in fines of up to £20m. The turnover of parent companies may also be considered in how fines are calculated.
Getting Tough on Compliance
The message to corporations is now clear; lax health and safety processes and risk assessment will not be tolerated and the Courts are prepared to punish companies harshly if they take a laissez-faire approach to the wellbeing of their workers.
Creating a Compliance Culture
Organisations will need to invest heavily in ensuring that a strong compliance culture runs through their company, from the boardroom down to the factory floor. This can be achieved by training and communication but most importantly, it involves a commitment to move away from a ‘check the box’ mentality when it comes to regulatory compliance on health and safety matters.
