Bristol Crown Court has fined Euro Dismantling Solutions £80,000 and handed down a suspended custodial sentence to a site supervisor after a man died on site in 2011.
The worker was driving a mini digger. An opening he was using as a ‘drop zone’ on the fourth floor to drop large fibreglass tanks was not properly protected to prevent the machine falling from the building. During a drop, one of the tanks became stuck on the mini digger and pulled the vehicle down the drop with it.
The employee died from the injuries he received.
Euro Dismantling Solutions Ltd, which is now in liquidation, pleaded guilty to Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 after it failed to ensure the safety of the now deceased employee while he was carrying out demolition work.
The Site Supervisor was charged under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to take reasonable care. He was also fined £7,500 as well as receiving a suspended 18-month prison sentence.
