From the 1st January 2019 an amendment to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Amendment) (No 2) regulations implements the “open scope” principle which brings all electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) into the scope of the U+EU directive unless exempt or excluded and retain the current UK WEEE product categories.
In simple terms this means that unless an electrical product is specifically exempt then it is in scope. – this is a reversal of the position of “closed scope”. This now categorises EEE into these categories, (Regulation 5 Schedule 3)
Large household appliances
Small household appliances
IT and telecommunications equipment
Consumer equipment and photovoltaic panels
Lighting equipment
Electrical and electronic tools (with the exception of large-scale stationary industrial tools)
Toys, leisure and sports equipment
Medical devices (with the exception of all devices that are expected to be infective prior to end of life and active implantable medical devices)
Monitoring and control instruments
Automatic dispensers
