Cotswold Geotechnical Holdings Limited became the first company to be convicted of corporate manslaughter under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 following the death of an employee, Geologist Alexander Wright. Mr Wright was crushed by a collapsed trench in which he was taking geotechnical measurements on 5th September 2008. The trench was 12.6ft (3.8 metres) deep, unsupported and he was working alone. The court found the company's systems of work were outdated and unsafe.
On 15th February 2011 Cotswold Geotechnical was found guilty at Winchester Crown Court of Corporate Manslaughter. The company was fined £385,000 although due to the its financial state could pay the fine over 10 years at a rate of £38,500 per annum.
